| "Hot melts" is the name given to the thermoplastic
adhesives, solid at room temperature, and which can be applied as a liquid (melt)
by means of heat. These materials form strong bonds on the work surface as they cool. Unlike liquid adhesives hot melts, applied without using chemical reactions or solvent evaporation, provide important environmental benefits.
Since they can be handled and stored in the solid state, hot melts facilitate the logistics and transport processes. Hot melts have contributed to the development of faster and more productive machinery. Their higher viscosity, compared to that of solvent based adhesives, allows utilization in porous and non porous surfaces without sacrificing union strength. Hot melts are found in a wide variety of applications, from furniture and shoes to diapers and cigarette manufacturing. Waxes play an important role in the production, processing and performance
of hot melts. IRM waxes for hot-melts are selected to be
compatible with
the applicable resins and polymers, and with the specifications of the adhesive material. Waxes
constitute up to 70% of the total hot melt formulation, depending on the
application form and on the required hot melt properties.
